Kinshasa DRC Produced 38 percent of gold from artisanal mining

Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), contributed significantly to the nation's gold production in 2021. According to the National Ministry of Mines, Kinshasa produced an estimated 51.3 kg of gold, representing 38% of the country's total artisanal gold output. This highlights the role of artisanal mining in the DRC's gold sector, even though industrial mining, particularly by companies like Kibali Gold Mines, dominates overall gold production.

While industrial gold mining accounted for the vast majority of DRC's gold exports in 2021 (31,308 kg out of a total of 31,444 kg), artisanal mining, though smaller in scale, remains an important source of income for many. The 135 kg of gold attributed to artisanal miners came primarily from South Kivu (46%), Kinshasa (38%), Tshopo (13%), and North Kivu (3%). These statistics underscore the regional distribution of artisanal gold mining activities within the DRC. The DRC's gold exports in 2021 generated over $1.2 billion USD, showcasing the economic importance of this resource. For those interested in sourcing gold from the DRC, understanding the balance between industrial and artisanal production, as well as the regional contributions, is crucial. Partnering with a reputable dealer like Phantom Bullion can help navigate the complexities of the DRC's gold market and ensure responsible sourcing.
